greetings i have humor!!!!!

Long time no blog. Oh well, sometimes the words flow like buttah, and sometimes all the creativity is oozing out in other directions. Well, it's been flowing in other directions lately. Anyway, I'm back, and not really flowing, but I have a great question for all of you, men and ladies. My friend Shaun made this comment to me on myspace today. I thought it was a unique perspective, and actually kind of funny too! He was commenting about greeting cards after I had mentioned my new greeting card line. Here's what he said:"I think that women just buy themfor themselves sometimes, and don't even send them to people. It's like collecting Pokemon for them,or baseball cards."Is that true? I know every now and then I end up with a funny card and don't know who to send it to, so it sits on my dresser or desk for a year or two before I throw it away. But do women actually buy and save greeting cards? I gotta know. 'Fess up ladies! (Husbands, feel free to tattle on your wives!)Is this yet another hilarious difference between us Martians and you Venusites?Let's hear it. I think Shaun may be right on this one!(By the way, if it's true, please add my new greeting cards to your 'collection')Peace,Chris

is yu-gi-oh puting kids in danger?? #01

Yu-Gi-Oh!
I appreciate and trust all your views on subjects like Harry Potter and Pokemon, now I'm wondering if you've done any research into this Yu-Gi-Oh thing. Can you help me? Thanks in advance.
Another Letter...We would like to find out more about Yu-Gi-oh game(s), cards, show, etc... My son wants to buy the cards and play with his friends but we are under the impression that it is similar to Pokemon. Can you tell us about this new fad and give us scripture for or against it?
EDITORIAL
Numbers: Konami sold 7 million card-based games for PlayStation and GB players, generating $300 million. Card sales produced $1 Billion. The comic book version has sold 15 million copies worth $70 million. Along with licensed goods (board games, ect.) the TV show and videos, and the total pushes $2 billion! All in the year 2000, by the way.
As mentioned in a letter above, Yu-Gi-Oh! is many things - it is a comic book, cartoon series, toys, model kits, and games (card and video). Parents and children have written Even A Child asking if Yu-Gi-Oh! is good entertainment or bad. Of course the answer isn't ours to give... any view of right and wrong must be based on God's Word.
"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world... We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ... Don't look only on the surface of things." 2 Corinthians 10:3-7
Who and/or What is Yu-Gi-Oh?
Background story: Yugi Mutou is the main character of Yu-Gi-Oh! He completed the Millennium Puzzle, which unlocked a personality hidden deep within the puzzle. This personality comes out whenever Yugi needs to play a game. This "other" Yugi is called the "Dark Yugi". The Duel Monsters card game was invented by the character, Pegasus J. Crawford, who also stole the soul of Yugi's grandfather. Yugi travels to the Duelist Kingdom to retrieve his grandfather's soul.
"Dark Yugi" personality taking over Yugi could pretty much be called demon possession - given the all the occult references surrounding it. The notion that a child or anyone needs to be taken over by a dark force to complete a task - let alone play a game, is bad no matter how you try to defend it.
"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12
Millenium Puzzle: Supposedly an Egyptian artifact discovered by Yugi's grandfather. It was said of the puzzle, that "the one that solves that puzzle will inherit the ability to play "Games of Darkness" for justice, and to judge evil. And the 'tale of the one who died" long ago will be written again.'" I'd have to do some more research to figure that last part out, but it sure sounds weird.
Also, we find in today's entertainment world a mixing of darkness with light; Harry Potter is a Wizard - but uses it for good, Yugi is taken over by Dark Yugi, but plays for justice... etc. The trouble is that good and evil are like oil and water.. they don't mix (except in fiction).
And this lure of using evil powers to do good, brings another story and a warning to mind:
"And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Genesis 3:4-5
"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." Ephesians 5:8-11
Obviously, the serpent was misleading Eve by her desire to KNOW something... and to be familiar with Good AND Evil. I hear teenagers straying toward this edge all the time. God sent Christ to die for our sins so we would be free from their consequences... not to go back and play with them!
"As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly." Proverbs 26:11
I apologize for that visual image... but that's what it's there for! That's the truth about people playing with evil.
Yo-Gi-Oh! picks up on the common theme of strongly tying into Egyptian mythology and "gods". Remember the Egyptians? They were visited by plaques when Pharaoh refused to listen to God's man, Moses. You should ALSO recall they came out very badly in the battle between Egypt's false god's and Israel's God, Jehovah.
What does Yu-Gi-Oh! mean? It's kind of a play on the main character's name. Yugi means "game" or "play". The ending, "ou" or "Oh", indicates royalty, its tense meaning "king." Thus, the name is "The Game King" or "King of Games".
Comic Books
The origins of the tale are told in popular Japanese comic books. The first Japanese comic book (of which I read an English translation) was quite full of bad language, violence and inappropriate visuals, comments and attitudes towards girls (pretty typical of Japanese comics and animation).
One scene that comes later in the comic, has Yugi setting up a "game" with one of his enemies. The game included a large stack of money, the back of your hand, and a good sharp knife. I won't describe it in any more detail, but it should be clearly noted that this "game" would be frowned on by any supervising adult.
The Cartoon IS the Game!
Cartoons
A few years ago, child advocate groups fought to have network cartoons regulated to limit the ability of toy companies to basically run 30 minute cartoon advertisements for toys they wanted kids to run to the stores to buy. These rules do not apply to cable networks, and the toy market has grown - along with children's materialistic view of life.
Remember Pokemon? That cartoon spawned a collector card game to roughly follow the semi-violent, magical fighting of the cartoon characters. Yu-Gi-Oh! takes this to the next logical conclusion. The cartoon is ABOUT the card game! No longer do children pretend to be fighting like on their favorite TV show - now they are playing the exact SAME game, with the exact SAME cards as ON the show! The marketing logic is admirable - yet questionable.
Collector Card Game
As said above, the collector card game IS the cartoon, and the cartoon IS the game. I refer to it as the "collector" card game, to stress the difference between card games of this generation, and those of most parents. This is not a game you buy in a box and invite your neighbors over to play - no further purchase necessary...
ALL players must purchase their own decks, and a serious player will continually make his deck better by
A. trading with othersB. winning someone else's cards in a game (gambling), C. buying more and more card sets.
Danger of Materialism: In fact, good sets will run a collector anywhere from $20 to over $100. I've spoken to those who play these games and the temptation is to spend hundreds of dollars just to play a "serious" game - and compete. It can be an addiction. Whether addictive or not, in a day when missionaries struggle financially in the ministry, how are we teaching children to give sacrificially, when we encourage spending so much money on fad games?
Good or Bad?
Below is a short list of the names of some Yu-Gi-Oh cards. This is NOT a complete list, by any means. Also, there are a group of cards known as "god cards". The names of many of the cards (not to mention the images on the cards, and the strategy used in playing the game) bring some not-so-pleasant images to mind. There seem to be names related to demonism, witchcraft, drugs, etc.
Feral Imp, Winged Dragon, Summoned Skull, Rock Ogre, Killer Needle, Harpie Lady, Harpie Lady Sisters, Cocoon of Evolution, Crawling Dragon, Armored Zombie, Mask of Darkness, Doma the Angel of Silence, White Magical Hat, Masked Sorcerer, Elegant Egotist, Mystic Lamp, Magician of Faith, Destroyer Golem, Kaminari Attack, Rainbow Flower, Pale Beast, Electric Lizard, Fake Trap, Tribute to the Doomed, Soul Release, The Cheerful Coffin, Blackland Fire Dragon, Time Wizard, Saggi the Dark Clown, Dragon Piper, Illusionist Faceless Mage, Castle of Dark Illusions, Mystic Horseman, Rabid Horseman, Crass Clown, Pumpking the King of Ghosts, Dream Clown, Tainted Wisdom, Tremendous Fire, Shadow Ghoul, Punished Eagle, Dark Elf, Witch of the Black Forest, Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon, Witch's Apprentice, Solemn Judgment, Seven Tools of the Bandit, Horn of Heaven, The Unhappy Maiden, Robbin' Goblin, Germ Infection, Paralyzing Potion, Mirror Force, Ring of Magnetism, Share the Pain, Stim-Pack, Thousand Dragon
One MIGHT argue that passively watching a children's cartoon with any of these elements will not effect a child (an empty argument). However, what Yu-Gi-Oh does, is to bring the child INTO the game and make him/her the one to summon dark magic, germ infections, paralyzing potions, pain, and more - all in the name of "innocent fun".
Interesting Side Note
The game itself is nicely complicated and requires cunning, strategy and memorization of procedures, rules and techniques, I find it funny that some parents feel GUILTY when they encourage a child to memorize a Bible verse (or study for a school test), when a child can digest and memorize pages and pages of this type of tedious information:
Gate Guardian
This card can only be Special Summoned by offering "Sanga of the Thunder", "Kazejin" and "Suijin" on your side of the field as a Tribute.
Larvae Moth
This monster can only be Special Summoned by offering "Petit Moth" as a Tribute on the 2nd of your turns after "Petit Moth" has been equipped with "Cocoon of Evolution".
Harpie Lady Sisters
This monster can only be Special Summoned with the magic card Elegant Egotist.
Cocoon of Evolution
You may treat this card as an Equipment magic card on a face-up Petit Moth on the field. When equipped, the ATK and DEF of Petit Moth become the same as Cocoon of Evolution.
Mask of Darkness
FLIP: Select 1 Trap from your Graveyard and return it to your hand.
White Magical Hat
When this card inflicts damage to your opponent's Life Points, 1 card must be randomly discarded to your opponent's hand to his or her Graveyard.
Big Eye
FLIP: See the 5 cards on the top of your Deck, arrange them in any order desired, and replace them on top of the Deck.
B. Skull Dragon
Summoned Skull + Red Eyes B. Dragon
Masked Sorcerer
When you inflict damage to your opponent's Life Points with this card, draw 1 card from your Deck.
Is Yu-Gi-Oh the destroyer of America?
Hardly! However, damage IS done when God's children (and parents) fail to follow God's truth in every area of our lives - including amusements. Demonism is demonism. False gods are false gods. Materialism is... you get the picture. It is foolish to disregard God's instructions.
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
The word "amusement" is interesting. "Muse" has the meaning of "thinking", while "A" as a prefix means "NOT". Amusement is a time of not thinking! We like to turn off our brains at the end of a hard day and just be entertained. This is not a problem as long as we don't also turn off obedience to God's wisdom and instruction.
At best, games/comic books/cartoons like Yu-Gi-Oh!, encourage materialism and greed. At worst, they allow a child to fantasize about having power that is violent and demonic.

IS POKE'MON BAD FOR CHILDREN!!??

Pokemon: What is it?
Pokemon, which is short for "pocket monster," has become a phenomenal success in America among children. There are cartoons and even a movie based upon the Pokemon characters. Most every child in America is familiar with this fad and owns some form of Pokemon paraphernalia. But, what is Pokemon?
Pokemon was created by Nintendo in Japan in 1996. It is a role-playing game involving cards, Nintendo Game Boy, and TV cartoons. The cards have pictures of different Pokemon on them, more than 150 so far. The Pokemon are supposed to be "monsters" that have special powers and share the world with humans. The idea of the game is to have the children learn how to collect as many Pokemon as possible, train them, and use them against each other people's Pokemon by invoking the various abilities of each Pokemon creature. Pokemon can evolve and pass through various levels, 100 being the highest. Colored energy cards are sometimes used to aid the Pokemon.
There are four basic types of cards.
Basic Pokemon cards which depict creatures that fight for you against other people's Pokemon.
Evolution cards depict Pokemon that are able to evolve into more powerful creatures.
Energy cards are united with other cards to give the Pokemon more energy needed in carrying out the trainer's orders.
Trainer cards are cards used one time and then discarded.
There are different types or categories of Pokemon: Bug, Fighting, Fire, Flying, Dragon, Electric, Ghost, Grass, Ground, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, and Water. Within each type are several different Pokemon each possessing various abilities. I've constructed a chart below of some of the categories of Pokemon.

Type of Pokemon
Individuals found within category
Various abilities found in Group
Fire Pokemon
Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Flareon, Growlithe, Magmar, Moltres, Ponyta, Rapidash, Vulpix, Ninetails
Scorching, heating, running, stomping, racing,
Electric
Electabuzz, Jolteon, Magnemite, Magneton, Pikachu, Raichu, Voltorb, Electrode, Zapdos
Lightning bolts, anti-gravity, explosions,
Ghost
Gastly, Haunter, Gengar
Ultra dimensional, poison, mimicry, taunting
Poison
Ekans, Arbok, Grimer, Muk, Koffing, Weezing, Nidoran(Female),Nidorina, Nidoqueen, Nidoran(Male), Nidorino, Nidoking
Silence, stealth, use of poison, use of claws and biting, breaking opponents' bones.
Psychic
Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Drowsee, Hypno, Jynx, Mew, Mewtwo, Mr. Mime
Reading minds, teleportation, inducing headaches, high intelligence, consumes people's dreams, hypnosis, confusion, evolves.

Within the game evolution is taught repeatedly. There are special stones (Fire, Leaf, Moon, Thunder, and Water) that can be used force some Pokemon to evolve into more powerful creatures. Of course, after normal development in skill learning, various Pokemon often evolve on their own.
Is Pokemon Dangerous?
Is Pokemon dangerous? Potentially, yes it is. It conditions the child who plays the game into accepting occult and evolutionary principles. Haunter can hypnotize, eat a person's dreams, and drain their energy. Abra reads minds. Kadabra emits negative energy that harms others. Gastly induces sleep. Gengar laughs at peoples' fright. Nidoran uses poison. The Psychic type of Pokemon are among the strongest in the game. Charmander, Haunter, Ivysaur, Kadabra, and many more evolve. The children are taught to use these creatures to do their will by invoking colored energy cards, fights, and commands. Much of it is reminiscent of occult and eastern mysticism.
The Bible says to "Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it" (Prov. 22:6).1 2 Chron. 33:6 says, "And he made his sons pass through the fire in the valley of Ben-hinnom; and he practiced witchcraft, used divination, practiced sorcery, and dealt with mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger."
I do not see how allowing children to play with games that encourage fighting, reading of minds, use of poison, mimicry, taunting, teleportation, hypnosis, and evolution to be a good thing. This is not training a child to righteousness, but in accepting the occult and secular evolution. Is this what we, as Christians, want our children to meditate on? Of course not.
If children are conditioned to accept these things in youth, then they will be more likely to accept these ideas in adulthood. This leads people away from God's word and truth, not toward it. This is dangerous to a person's eternal destiny. More Information
On the Pokemon rules website it states, "Carry your Pokmon with you, and you're ready for anything! You've got the power in your hands, so use it!"
One observer of children playing the game said the children would afterwards mimic the game by summoning the Pokemon to attack others. This is occultic.
Pokemon are summoned to do battle and to protect. This is equivalent to sorcery.
Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water are frequent elemental themes found in Pagan religions, witchcraft, and Wicca and are used heavily in Pokemon.
The spiritual side of the world is real. There are spiritual elements and demonic forces at work whose purpose is to lead astray and destroy:
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places," (Eph. 6:12)
The enemy is powerful and cunning. The only light we have is the Bible and we need to follow it and not give ourselves or our children into the hands of those who would introduce occultic principles in a role-playing game. Again, the Bible says...
"But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons," (1 Tim. 4:1).
There is nothing wrong with children having fun using their imaginations. But, when that fun involves the occult it is dangerous. As Christians, we should be very concerned about what our children are involved in since they can be so easily influenced. They don't need the influence of the occult or evolutionary theory to help them towards Christ. They need the truth.
You are over reacting
Addendum - two months later:
This article has generated some interesting responses. I've been called delusional, bigoted, paranoid, and one who contributes to the decline of society because of my intolerant comments about an innocent and fun child's game. One mother who claimed to be a Christian, emailed me with heavy complaints and accusations and sought to justify her actions in encouraging her children to watch Pokemon. Well, that is her prerogative.
Have I changed my opinion? Not at all. Am I delusional, bigoted, paranoid, and a contributor to social decay? I certainly hope not. But, from what I see in God's word and from what I have seen in Pokemon, I still stand on what I have said.
I expect people to not like it when their comfort zone is rattled, when I don't tote the secular line and salute to "harmless children's games" even when they teach occultism. By the way, I told the Christian mother that the Lord will hold her accountable for how her children are raised. I asked her if she wants to continue to encourage her children to play with cards that teach casting spells, evolution, and controlling forces to do your bidding. She emailed me back and called me some names.
Others have simply assumed a non-Christian perspective and made judgments about me and this article from their non-Christian point of view. That isn't a problem. They are entitle to their opinions as am I.
Is Pokemon good? I don't think so. Does it contribute to impressionable children accepting occult ideas? Yes, it does.
Another comment:
I would like to thank you for your stand against pokemon and other such materials. I understand how you feel when confronted by supposed "christians" who oppose what your trying to do here. I think that it's a sad time we live in when even the church members want to go around doing what seems right in there own eyes, and the tell you it's o.k. because "we're under grace so we don't need to follow the rules anymore". Let me say this, the majority of the problems we're facing today in christianity are here because of the lack of strong leadership. Most pulpits today are delivering feel good sermons that have little spiritual effect, while our remaining power dwindles away due to the gross sins being committed right under our noses. I personnally have been in churches that were supposedly "filled with the annointing" and watched the children in the seats in front of me playing pokemon & dungeons and dragons while the parents "worshipped God". Pretty sad.

DO WORM HOLES EXSIST!!!???

there is a theory that if you go through a worm holes it will send you through time but it was proved to be wrong by our scientists

Experts Say Wormholes, Time Machines Unreliable By Bill Christensenposted: 27 May 200506:51 am ET
According to a new paper by researchers Roman Buniy and Stephen Hsu, traversable wormholes and time machines cannot be both stable and predictable. Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen published the first scientific paper on wormholes (also called Einstein-Rosen bridges) in 1935, describing how it might be possible for two distant regions of space-time to be connected through a tunnel-like spatial shortcut.
The basic idea of a wormhole derives from a simple analogy. If the universe is like the skin of an apple (from a topological viewpoint), a worm trying to crawl to diametrically opposite points could save time by boring through the apple, rather than staying on the surface. Another version of this kind of analogy uses the idea that you can bring two distant points on a sheet of paper together - by folding the paper.
Wormhole (theoretical diagram)
The resulting "wormhole" consists of two or more "mouths" (or holes in the surface) connected to a "throat" which provides the passage.
A traversable wormhole could be used for either travel from one point to another, or from one time to another. Unfortunately, according to the paper, quantum effects are necessary for the construction of stable traversable wormholes. This would cause the wormhole to behave unpredictably; you might not know where (or when) you would come out. Wormholes and time machines cannot be both predictable and stable.
"We aren't saying you can't build a wormhole. But the ones you would like to build - the predictable ones where you can say Mr Spock will land in New York at 2pm on this day - those look like they will fall apart," Dr Hsu said.(From Wormholes no use for space travel)
This is very bad news for science fiction fans. Wormholes have been used by generations of sf writers to enable ships to travel between stars in the time it takes to turn a page. In his 1934 story Xandulu, Jack Williamson writes "I can fold space as readily as you double a sheet of paper. I can reach through hyperspace where distance means nothing."
If you could see a wormhole, it would look like this. In theory.
In his 1939 novel Grey Lensman, E.E. "Doc" Smith refers to "Dirac Holes" and "hyperspatial tubes" that can be used instead of being forced to traverse normal space. By the time Isaac Asimov's Foundation series debuted in 1950, hyperspace travel was commonplace.
What would it be like to step through a wormhole? Frank Herbert described a jumpdoor's "vortal tube" in this way:
The jumpdoor began to hum with its aura of terrifying energies. The door's vortal tube snapped open. McKie tensed himself for the syrupy resistance to jumpdoor passage, stepped through the tube. It was like swimming in air became molasses - perfectly normal-appearing air. But molasses.

DO BLACK HOLES EXSIST!!?? WILL IT DEASTROY THE MILKEYWAY!!???

IF WE CANT SEE THEM THAN HOW DO WE KNOW THEY'RE THERE??!!

Black HolesThere are many popular myths concerning black holes, many of them perpetuated by Hollywood. Television and movies have portrayed them as time-traveling tunnels to another dimension, cosmic vacuum cleaners sucking up everything in sight, and so on. It can be said that black holes are really just the evolutionary end point of massive stars. But somehow, this simple explanation makes them no easier to understand or less mysterious.
NOTE: This section is about what are called "stellar-mass black holes". For information about black holes with the mass of billions of Suns, see Active Galaxies & Quasars .
Black Holes: What Are They?Black holes are the evolutionary endpoints of stars at least 10 to 15 times as massive as the Sun. If a star that massive or larger undergoes a supernova explosion, it may leave behind a fairly massive burned out stellar remnant. With no outward forces to oppose gravitational forces, the remnant will collapse in on itself. The star eventually collapses to the point of zero volume and infinite density, creating what is known as a " singularity ". As the density increases, the path of light rays emitted from the star are bent and eventually wrapped irrevocably around the star. Any emitted photons are trapped into an orbit by the intense gravitational field; they will never leave it. Because no light escapes after the star reaches this infinite density, it is called a black hole.
But contrary to popular myth, a black hole is not a cosmic vacuum cleaner. If our Sun was suddenly replaced with a black hole of the same mass, the earth's orbit around the Sun would be unchanged. (Of course the Earth's temperature would change, and there would be no solar wind or solar magnetic storms affecting us.) To be "sucked" into a black hole, one has to cross inside the Schwarzschild radius. At this radius, the escape speed is equal to the speed of light, and once light passes through, even it cannot escape.
The Schwarzschild radius can be calculated using the equation for escape speed.
vesc = (2GM/R)1/2For photons, or objects with no mass, we can substitute c (the speed of light) for Vesc and find the Schwarzschild radius, R, to be
R = 2GM/c2
If the Sun was replaced with a black hole that had the same mass as the Sun, the Schwarzschild radius would be 3 km (compared to the Sun's radius of nearly 700,000 km). Hence the Earth would have to get very close to get sucked into a black hole at the center of our solar system.
If We Can't See Them, How Do We Know They're There?
Since black holes are small (only a few to a few tens of kilometers in size), and light that would allow us to see them cannot escape, a black hole floating alone in space would be hard, if not impossible, to see. For instance, the photograph above shows the optical companion star to the (invisible) black hole candidate Cyg X-1.
However, if a black hole passes through a cloud of interstellar matter, or is close to another "normal" star, the black hole can accrete matter into itself. As the matter falls or is pulled towards the black hole, it gains kinetic energy, heats up and is squeezed by tidal forces. The heating ionizes the atoms, and when the atoms reach a few million degrees Kelvin, they emit X-rays. The X-rays are sent off into space before the matter crosses the Schwarzschild radius and crashes into the singularity. Thus we can see this X-ray emission.
Binary X-ray sources are also places to find strong black hole candidates. A companion star is a perfect source of infalling material for a black hole. A binary system also allows the calculation of the black hole candidate's mass. Once the mass is found, it can be determined if the candidate is a neutron star or a black hole, since neutron stars always have masses of about 1.5 times the mass of the sun. Another sign of the presence of a black hole is random variation of emitted X-rays. The infalling matter that emits X-rays does not fall into the black hole at a steady rate, but rather more sporadically, which causes an observable variation in X-ray intensity. Additionally, if the X-ray source is in a binary system, the X-rays will be periodically cut off as the source is eclipsed by the companion star. When looking for black hole candidates, all these things are taken into account. Many X-ray satellites have scanned the skies for X-ray sources that might be possible black hole candidates.
Cygnus X-1 is the longest known of the black hole candidates. It is a highly variable and irregular source with X-ray emission that flickers in hundredths of a second. An object cannot flicker faster than the time required for light to travel across the object. In a hundredth of a second, light travels 3000 kilometers. This is one fourth of Earth's diameter! So the region emitting the x-rays around Cygnus X-1 is rather small. Its companion star, HDE 226868 is a B0 supergiant with a surface temperature of about 31,000 K. Spectroscopic observations show that the spectral lines of HDE 226868 shift back and forth with a period of 5.6 days. From the mass-luminosity relation, the mass of this supergiant is calculated as 30 times the mass of the Sun. Cyg X-1 must have a mass of about 7 solar masses or else it would not exert enough gravitational pull to cause the wobble in the spectral lines of HDE 226868. Since 7 solar masses is too large to be a white dwarf or neutron star, it must be a black hole.
However, there are arguments against Cyg X-1 being a black hole. HDE 226868 might be undermassive for its spectral type, which would make Cyg X-1 less massive than previously calculated. In addition, uncertainties in the distance to the binary system would also influence mass calculations. All of these uncertainties can make a case for Cyg X-1 having only 3 solar masses, thus allowing for the possibility that it is a neutron star.
Nonetheless, there are now about 10 binaries for which the evidence for a black hole is much stronger than in Cygnus X-1. The first of these, an X-ray transient called A0620-00, was discovered in 1975, and the mass of the compact object was determined in the mid-1980's to be greater than 3.5 solar masses. This very clearly excludes a neutron star, which has a mass near 1.5 solar masses, even allowing for all known theoretical uncertainties. The best case for a black hole is probably V404 Cygni, whose compact star is at least 10 solar masses. With improved instrumentation, the pace of discovery has accelerated over the last five years or so, and the list of dynamically confirmed black hole binaries is growing rapidly.
What about all the Wormhole Stuff?
Unfortunately, worm holes are more science fiction than they are science fact. A wormhole is a theoretical opening in space-time that one could use to travel to far away places very quickly. The wormhole itself is two copies of the black hole geometry connected by a throat - the throat, or passageway, is called an Einstein-Rosen bridge. It has never been proved that worm holes exist and there is no experimental evidence for them, but it is fun to think about the possibilities their existence might create.
